Relish the flavours of Tai O

Tai O at the western coast of Lantau Island is probably the only village in Hong Kong with long-standing houses on stilts lining its picturesque turquoise canals. These are the homes of the Tanka people, fisherfolk who have lived above the tidal flats for generations.

New infrastructure has made this village more accessible, but much of its old charm remains – making it ideal for groups looking to learn about Hong Kong’s fishing history while indulging in delicious traditionally prepared fresh seafood. Look for stalls selling classic snacks such as brined cuttlefish, grilled squid and freshly fried Chinese-style donuts. Many renowned Chinese seafood restaurants serving Tai O’s specialties can accommodate parties of more than 50 people at a time.
